Aberdeen Waterfall | A Hidden Beauty in Sri Lanka

An ethereal Sri Lankan natural heritage, Aberdeen Waterfall is situated in Ginigathena, Nuwara Eliya. It is 98 metres in height and is a Waterfall on the Kehelgamu Oya. This is a hidden beauty in Sri Lanka tucked away in the countryside. It is very beautiful and picturesque during the rainy season with its dense stream. And the plunge pool it has created is beautiful with sandy patches, rocks and greenish blue waters.  The natural cuts in the outcrop where the Aberdeen falls from is also aesthetically appealing to look at.

However, Aberdeen waterfall is not safe to bathe without proper guidance. It is reported that over 18 people have died while bathing here as there are deadly and deep spots in the plunge pool.  Therefore, some residents guide the place and direct the travellers into safe spots to bathe and enjoy. So, be responsible and follow the lead while appreciating the view as you please.

How to go to Aberdeen Waterfall

From Ginigathena Bus Stand, the waterfall is located 11.5 kilometres away. It will take around 40 minutes to reach your destination.

If you are travelling by bus, take the Kalaweldeniya bus from Ginigathena bus stand and they will drop you at the road to the waterfall. Then walk 1.5 kms until you meet the parking lot. Then you meet cement steps directly taking you to the viewpoint of the Aberdeen waterfall.

If you are travelling from Colombo by your vehicle –

Avissawella – Nuwara Eliya Road -> Kalugala – Laxapana Road -> Dagampitiya – Kelanigama Road -> and you reach Aberdeen Waterfall.

This road to the waterfall is abundant in different kinds of trees, bushes and grass lavishing in green and happiness.

A bit for history

Aberdeen waterfall has been given its name after the third largest city in Scotland and the capital of Aberdeenshire. This must be during the period of colonisation in Sri Lanka with Scottish influences it underwent.

Endnote

Every waterfall has its own beauty. But the beauty of Aberdeen has not been seen enough. Unlike many popular waterfalls in Sri Lanka, Aberdeen is closed and protected by a woodland. This has made this place cooler and calmer for every traveller who reached it for fun or relaxation. That is a more than enough reason to start your journey to Aberdeen waterfall today. But I would suggest October to November is the best season to visit the Aberdeen waterfall.

Remember, safety comes first!

And don’t forget to take pictures!
