How to Get to Pitawala Pathana
Pitawala Pathana is located in Matale District. From Matale town, you should head northwest on Kany Road and turn into Matale – Illukkumbura Road. The whole journey is 32 km from Matale town and approximately it will take 1 hrs and 30 mins to reach the destination.
But, trust me, you will not get tired of the journey because of the road covered in green canopy of trees creating an amazing view for the travellers.
If you are travelling from Colombo by your own vehicle,
- Kandy Road -> Kurunegala Road -> Dambulla Road -> Imbulandanda Road -> Matale – Illukkumbura Road.
If you are travelling by bus or train, take the bus or the train from Colombo Fort to Matale.
Travel tips
There are two buses that travel from Rattota to Illukumbura if you could catch them but the smartest way to reach the destination is by hiring a taxi or renting a vehicle.
The area is only open from 6am to 6pm. So, plan your options before starting the trip.
Between January and March would be ideal if you want to visit during less rainy days.
You will have to buy a ticket from the office at the entrance.

There is a canteen at the entrance for the travellers. You can bring your own food into the grassland too. But be mindful about not leaving a trace by collecting all your garbage.
