They estimate its origin runs back to 500 BCE, following the arrival of Arahat Mahinda in 307 BCE. It is said that prince Uttiya, the brother of King Devanampiyathissa, renovated the Kelaniya temple and also built the first residential quarters for Buddhist Monks (Sangawasa)

After the Buddha extended his wisdom, on the disputed throne, the two kings came to lasting peace.
